Hi Patti. You make an excellent point, but third party testing is pretty critical to gaining consumer trust and product acceptance and keeping manufacturers honest. There will be more product choices once manufacturers realize the consumer is no longer interested in being gassed, poisoned, et cetera.

Oh, Michael, I have to thank you for the good laugh. Don't be surprised if a Florida bureaucrat contacts you, as we all know that market needs something dynamic. Why not guilt? An old friend of mine once said, "I never met a person with a little guilt I didn't like." Candidly, I haven't either. From everything of yours that I've read, in spite of the first paragraph above, I have a feeling your mother is quite happy with the son you are and didn't want to retire in Miami anyway.

Dear Green Landlady,

Guilt and shame were the cornerstones of my mother's parenting philosophy. The results were that I became a mensch, other than not marrying a nice Jewish girl, not becoming a doctor, not buying a nice condo in Miami for my parents to retire and (of course) not calling home with enough regularity.

Since Mother Earth needs us to put down some of our carbon spewing ways, a little guilt and shame could be highly profitable (and might revive the South Florida condo market).

Hi Georgia, I had read that Bloomberg had the planners studying which crosswalks were causing the most pedestrian deaths, but I hadn't seen this site. Thanks! It did seem, though, that the intersections that allowed for a high speed when the driver entered the turn were the most treacherous - particularly for seniors!

Hi Janet, thanks for pointing out that the zones really have nothing to do with an individual property's radon concentration amount, although they do show which areas have the highest risk cumulatively. We did emphasize this point in the article, "... excessive radon levels have been found in all three zones, which is why each individual property needs proper testing."

We probably should have added that safe levels have also been found in all three zones. This is really the main reason we published the article. Along with the EPA and healthcare and building professionals, we strongly encourage residents and property managers to test the bottom few floors of each and every property as this is where the gas can accumulate. If the test shows the units are safe, all ends well. It there are ventilation systems that need an upgrade, radon remediators can immediately correct the problem and ensure the safety of occupants.

Very informative article. The only part I question is "Areas coded as Zone 1 have the least amount of radon and Zone 3 will have the most" I tend to not put a whole lot of emphasis on those maps. (yellow, orange, red) People should not feel too safe if they see that they live in a yellow zone nor should they panic if they live in a red zone. Both high and low radon concentrations can be found in all zones.
